Guaranteed Health Insurance Plan

As a HIPAA eligible enrollee you are guaranteed the right to buy individual health coverage from the South Carolina Health Insurance Pool (SCHIP). Note:

  • SCHIP prohibits pre-existing condition exclusion periods and elimination riders
  • SCHIP is your only guaranteed source of individual health insurance

HIPAA Eligibility

To be HIPAA eligible in South Carolina, you must:

  1. Have 18 months of continuous creditable coverage, with at least the last day under the Brethren Ministers Group; and
  2. Not be eligible for Medicare, Medicaid or a group plan; and
  3. Apply for health insurance for which you are HIPAA eligible within 63 days of losing your prior coverage; and
  4. Not have health insurance.

Note: If you know your group coverage is about to end, you can apply for coverage for which you will be HIPAA eligible.

What does SCHIP Insurance coverage cost?

South Carolina Health Insurance Pool premiums vary based on plan chosen, age and gender. Under South Carolina law, the SHCIP premium is capped 200% of the average market rate. Click here to view SCHIP rates.

SCHIP Coverage Highlights

  • $1 million lifetime maximum benefit
  • Three different plans offered:
    • 80/80 plan: $500 deductible & $1500 out of pocket maximum
    • 80/60 plan: $500 deductible & $2000 out of pocket maximum (in network) and $7000 out of pocket (out of network)
    • SCHIP does not offer family coverage. Each family member must qualify on his or her own.
  • Benefits include hospital and physician services, prescription drugs, lab & x-ray tests & maternity
